In Queensland, sheds up to 10 sqm in area, with a height of no more than 2.4m (average 2.1m), and a length of no more than 5m on any side, can be built without building approval. Provided your proposed shed meets these size limits set out in Queensland’s building regulations, you can construct it without needing approval from the local building authority. The key factors are the 10 sqm area limit, 2.4m max height, and 5m max length per side. If your shed plans stay within these bounds, no formal approval is required.

The size limits depend on where you live. If you’re in a regular neighborhood, your shed can’t be bigger than 20 square meters. But if you’re out in the countryside in a rural area, you can go up to 50 square meters. Just make sure to leave at least 900 mm of space between the shed and your property lines on all sides.

Installing a shed directly against the side wall of a house is strongly discouraged and inadvisable. Due to overhanging eaves and gutters on most shed roofs, a small gap will be created between the shed and wall. This gap allows for the intrusion of pests, debris, and moisture which can lead to deterioration. For optimal performance and longevity, sheds should have a buffer space from all structures. Homeowners should avoid placing sheds flush against walls under all circumstances. The recommended best practice is to leave ample space around the perimeter of the shed during installation.
